Elba Island LNG import terminal

In 2008, Elba Island was operated by Southern LNG, at that time a subsidiary of El Paso Energy. Its purpose was to offload liquefied natural gas (LNG) from ships into storage tanks. Then the LNG would be compressed and vaporized and sent into a nearby pipeline for consumption. I worked on an expansion project that significantly increased the facility’s throughput and storage capabilities.
Shortly after commissioning, the price of natural gas dropped so much (primarily due to hydraulic fracturing) that importing no longer made sense. The site was converted to run the other direction: the first of ten small-scale liquefaction units entered commercial service in 2019, and all ten were running by August 2020. It is an export terminal now, under Kinder Morgan.
